Joan Barber is a narrative figurative painter of mainly women, with men sometimes present but in the background. Her figurative characters presented in nostalgic or higher frequency situations. She often depicts young women in wildly inventive and provocative costumes with amusing hairdos and doing amusing things. Her characters facial language and body language key to her work whether they performing stunts on the back of a horse or languishing on a beach or other louche locations. Her paintings imbued with nuance and emotion. Joan paints in thin layers of soft flat color shapes. She often uses rich patterning in costumes, wallpaper or furniture. Nonetheless there is a contemplative quality in the work in part due to the lack of shadows or strong highlights described.
